The Best Cleanser for Blackheads: How Salicylic Acid Works Against Blackheads

There are currently so many different acids on the market that it can be really hard to know exactly what to look for when buying a cleanser. Choosing the right cleanser is also one of the most important steps in any skincare routine. If you are struggling with cystic acne, blackheads, whiteheads, excess oil and congestion, uneven skin texture or dullness, this may be the right option for you.

One of my favourite acids, which has been around for a very long time, is salicylic acid. Salicylic acid belongs to a group of compounds called beta hydroxy acids. It is an exfoliating acid, often referred to as a BHA. Salicylic acid has unique properties that make it incredibly effective for blackhead removal.

Unlike alpha hydroxy acids, which work more on the surface of the skin, salicylic acid is able to penetrate deeper into the pore. Due to its lipophilic, or oil-loving, nature, it can cut through sebum and dissolve oil inside the pore, helping to thoroughly clean it out.

Why Choose BHAs Over AHAs for Oily, Acne-Prone Skin

The main reason salicylic acid is the right acid for oily and acne-prone skin is its oil-soluble properties. Most skincare ingredients are water-soluble, which makes it harder for them to penetrate oily, blackhead-prone pores. While AHAs are great for surface-level skin concerns, they are not as effective at cleaning out pores deeper within the hair follicle.

What About Acne Scarring, Does Salicylic Acid Help Reduce It

While salicylic acid can have a positive effect on skin resurfacing and texture, it will not fade deep scars or marks overnight. It may help improve pigmentation by gently resurfacing the skin over time, leading to a smoother texture and more even appearance. It also helps rebalance acne-prone skin by reducing breakouts, therefore reducing future scarring.

How to Use Salicylic Acid With Other Products

It is very important not to mix salicylic acid with other strong actives in the same routine, as this can impair your skin barrier and cause irritation and discomfort. Always start slowly when introducing new products into your routine. If you want to use other acids or strong actives, make sure to alternate days throughout the week.

Actives that pair well with salicylic acid include hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, as these help support hydration levels and maintain the skin barrier. Never skip moisturiser and always apply an appropriate SPF during the day. Choose lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas that will not clog pores.

Salicylic acid can be used morning and night on a daily basis if your skin tolerates it, as every skin is unique and different.

How Long Until I See Results When Using Salicylic Acid

All active ingredients take time to work, some longer than others. With salicylic acid, most people usually begin to see results within six to eight weeks.

In the first one to two weeks, you may notice your skin feels smoother, surface oil is less visible, and existing blackheads appear less dark or raised.

Between weeks three and six, you may notice fewer new blackheads forming, pores appearing smaller, and overall skin texture becoming less visible.

Long-term use, eight weeks and beyond, often results in significant improvement, smoother skin between treatments, less frequent breakouts, and improved absorption of skincare products.

Sensitive Skin and Salicylic Acid

While salicylic acid can be suitable for sensitive skin types, it is important to monitor your skin’s response and avoid overdoing it. Going slow and being patient will give you the best results. If you have sensitive skin, start using it once a week and gradually build up to avoid impairing your skin barrier. Skincare should never sting.

It is also important to remember that everyone’s skin is different. If you already have an impaired skin barrier, salicylic acid may not be the right choice for you just yet.

Getting rid of blackheads does not have to be complicated. When you know what works, it becomes much simpler. Salicylic acid stands out from the crowd for me because of its effectiveness and its ability to truly clean out pores and improve the overall appearance of the skin.
